‘Treat’ Your Teacher at Halloween

With Halloween soon to be celebrated, many children in ghostly garb can’t wait to “trick or treat.”

But, there’s nothing spooky about saying “thank you” to a great classroom teacher, according to the Arch Coal Foundation. In fact, it is an excellent time to nominate your favorite teacher for an Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award.

“The school year is in full swing and parents and children are recognizing the skills and professionalism of their teachers,” said John R. Snider, vice president of external affairs, eastern region, for Arch Coal. “While any time is a good time to acknowledge these superior teachers, why not give your outstanding teachers a special ‘treat’ and nominate them now for a $2,500 personal cash award from the Arch Coal Foundation?” With Halloween soon to be celebrated, many children in ghostly garb can’t wait to “trick or treat.”

“The school year is in full swing and parents and children are recognizing the skills and professionalism of their teachers,” said John R. Snider, vice president of external affairs, eastern region, for Arch Coal. “While any time is a good time to acknowledge these superior teachers, why not give your outstanding teachers a special ‘treat’ and nominate them now for a $2,500 personal cash award from the Arch Coal Foundation?”

Snider said nominations will be accepted until Jan. 11, 2008, but that the earlier a teacher is nominated, the more time that teacher will have to complete the application.

Each recipient of the achievement award receives a $2,500 personal, cash prize. Additionally, the West Virginia Education Association’s (WVEA) foundation, the West Virginia Foundation for the Improvement of Education, awards a $1,000 grant for use with at-risk students to each recipient’s school. Twelve awards are expected to be made in February 2008.

The teacher recognition program is supported by the West Virginia Department of Education, the West Virginia  Library Commission, the Office of the Governor Joe Manchin and the WVEA. Nomination forms are available in schools and libraries throughout the state. Online nominations can be made on the Arch Coal Web site, www.archteacherawards.com, or through the West Virginia Education Association Web site.

The Arch Coal Foundation also is a supporter of teacher recognition programs in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado, as well as a number of other education-related causes.
