Annual Event to Feature State Congressional Delegation and Governor Tomblin
CHARLESTON – The 38th Annual West Virginia Coal Association Mining Symposium will run February 2-4 at the Charleston Civic Center. Topics at this year’s event include environmental, safety and economic development issues. A primary focus of this year’s event will be the recent changes in the U.S. Congress and their potential impact on issues important to the future of our coal industry.
Guest speakers at this year’s event include:
· Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin
· U.S. Sen. John D. Rockefeller, IV
· U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin
· Rep. Nick Joe Rahall (3rd District – WV)
· Rep. Shelley Moore-Capito (2nd District – WV)
· Rep. David McKinley, (1st District – WV)
The annual Mountaineer Guardian Safety (29) and Reclamation (11) awards luncheons will be held on Thursday and Friday respectively. This year’s Mountaineer Guardian safety awards will be presented to 29 West Virginia companies and the Reclamation awards will go to 11 companies. The individual winners will be announced on the day of the award ceremonies.
“Coal is a vital part of the state’s economy,” said Bill Raney, president of the West Virginia Coal Association. “Each year our industry provides jobs for some 60,000 West Virginians, providing more than $3.2 billion in wages and pumping more than $26 billion into our state’s economy. This event is an opportunity for us to tell our story. This is our time to gather together our coal mining family and recognize the hard work West Virginia’s coal miners do every day.”
“We expect this year’s Symposium to surpass all our previous events,” said Raney. “We have a great group of speakers and sessions lined up and our member companies will have some great presentations of their current products and services available in our display area.”
(For a list of other speakers, see the attached schedule).
