Governor Manchin Appoints New Secretary of the DEP

Governor Manchin appointed Randy Huffman as Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) effective May 1, 2008.  He replaces the longest serving DEP Secretary Stephanie Timmermeyer who resigned in early April to pursue private interests with the intent of having more time to spend with her family.  Randy Huffman has been serving as the Deputy Secretary of DEP as well as the Director for the Division of Mining and Reclamation.  He immediately made two appointments to fill the positions he had held.

Governor Manchin appointed Randy Huffman as Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) effective May 1, 2008.  He replaces the longest serving DEP Secretary Stephanie Timmermeyer who resigned in early April to pursue private interests with the intent of having more time to spend with her family.  Randy Huffman has been serving as the Deputy Secretary of DEP as well as the Director for the Division of Mining and Reclamation.  He immediately made two appointments to fill the positions he had held.

Those included naming Lisa McClung to the position of Deputy Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection. Lisa began working for the DEP in 1994. She started out in the Division of Air Quality, where she held a number of positions including; Manager of the Title V Operating Permits Program, Assistant Director for Permitting and Deputy Director heading up the Planning and Permitting Sections. In 2005, she was named Director of the Division of Water and Waste Management. She is a graduate of the West Virginia Institute of Technology, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Lisa will continue to serve as Director of the Division of Water and Waste Management until a new director is named.

In addition, Tom Clarke has been named Acting Mining Director. Tom has worked for the DEP for 12 years as an Environmental Attorney. He has been the lead attorney for mining issues for the agency and is the current Chairman of the Conference of Governmental Mining Attorneys. Prior to joining the DEP, Tom was a staff attorney for Ziglar Coal and Peabody Coal for eight years, and was in private practice before that. Additionally, he worked as an underground coal miner in western Pennsylvania and southern West Virginia. He earned his Juris Doctorate from WVU in 1983 and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering.
