Cabela Event Winnter

More than 10,000 people stopped in or passed by the Friends of Coal exhibit at the Wheeling Cabela’s store June 26-29 as part of Cabela’s Hometown Heroes Celebration recognizing the contributions of coal miners, energy workers and active/retired military.

The Friends of Coal display was front and center at the entrance to the Cabela’s store.  Hundreds of people – area coal miners, energy workers and citizens from around the Tri-State region – signed up as a Friend of Coal.

Outreach efforts to local media resulted in at least three articles and/or editorials in the Wheeling newspapers and coverage by both local television stations multiple times.

Coach Don Nehlen was on hand to greet passers-by and to discuss the importance of this industry to the region.

The event culminated on Saturday, June 29 with presentations by the Friends of Coal, ceremonies recognizing our region’s military and a free concert by rising country star Chris Higbee.  In addition, the Friends of Coal provided a donation to Boatsies Boxes, an organization that creates and distributes care packages for members of the military serving overseas.

Chris Hamilton, senior vice president of the WV Coal Association, said, “Cabela’s provided a fantastic opportunity to showcase the benefits mining provides not only to the northern panhandle, but to our state and country.  CONSOL Energy was a great partner in this event and we appreciate their involvement.  Everyone that stopped by our booth expressed their dismay at the challenges facing the coal industry and the need to keep our miners working.  It was refreshing to hear the positive sentiment and support, and we look forward to staying actively engaged with our new Friends of Coal.”

Given the success of this event, planning has begun for a similar event at the Charleston Cabela’s store.  Stay tuned for details soon.
