Phoenix Coal-Mac Mining’s Holden 22 Surface Mine, Mingo-Logan’s Mountaineer II and Rockspring Development’s Camp Creek No. 1 Mine Take Top Honors at Annual Mountaineer Guardian Awards

Awards presented during 41st Annual Mining Symposium in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Forty-two West Virginia mining operations have been recognized by the industry for their safety efforts in 2013. The awards were announced on January 30th during the West Virginia Coal Association’s 41st Annual Mining Symposium in Charleston.

“Our members are committed to doing everything possible to ensure our coal miners return home safely at the end of their shifts each day,” said West Virginia Coal Association President Bill Raney. “Each and every one of our companies work hard every day to meet the highest standards of workplace safety.”

“We are so proud of these companies and their employees,” Raney said. “They are fantastic examples of the commitment to safety every one of our member companies shows on a daily basis. Each of them is to be commended for the hard work they put in to ensure their operations are as safe as possible.”

Phoenix Coal-Mac Mining’s Holden 22 Surface Mine Energy operation (Logan County) received the Bart B. Lay Milestones in Safety Award for Surface Mines.

Rockspring Development’s Camp Creek No. 1 Mine (Wayne County) along with Mingo-Logan’s Mountaineer II Mine (Logan County) were named co-winners of this year’s the Eustace E. Frederick Milestones of Safety Award.

“Phoenix Coal-Mac Mining’s Holden 22 operation, Rockspring Development’s Camp Creek No. 1 Mine and Mingo-Logan Mountaineer II operations have consistently shown a commitment to safety that goes above and beyond what is required by state and federal regulations,” West Virginia Coal Association Senior Vice President Chris Hamilton said. “They have raised the bar for the rest of the industry, showing their true dedication to the safety of their employees, and they are greatly deserving of this award.”

The West Virginia Coal Association’s Mountaineer Guardian Awards are presented each year to mining companies that have demonstrated a commitment to safety standards.  Inspectors for the West Virginia Office of Mine Health Safety and Training nominate companies based on numerous criteria.
