Germany Makes Gasoline from Coal Syngas Via Methanol

United States Patent: 4263141

The end product of this German-invented and US-patented technology is Gasoline.

An intermediary product which could and should be harvested and employed, for additional uses, such as the starting raw material for a variety of plastics and other products of commercial value, is Methanol.

The starting raw material is Coal.

Like many, if not most, of Big Oil's Coal-to-Liquid technology patents, that fact isn't spelled out too clearly.

You'll find it in the body of the patent, only once, as in:

"... a gasifying treatment of coal with oxygen and water vapor (can be made) to produce the desired synthesis gas."

You have to mine it out; but, it's there. And, that, the conversion of Coal, via Methanol, into Gasoline, is what this three-decades old technology is all about.

A brief excerpt:

"United States Patent 4,263,141 - Process of Producing Gasoline from Synthesis Gas

Inventor: Friedrich Moller, et. al.; Germany; April, 1981

Abstract: A process for the catalytic production of gasoline hydrocarbons from synthesis gas comprising carbon oxides and hydrogen is disclosed wherein the synthesis gas is fed initially to a methanol synthesis and thereafter effluent from the methanol synthesis is converted to gasoline hydrocarbons in a gasoline synthesis stage. The invention resides in that the entire effluent from the methanol synthesis stage is fed to the gasoline synthesis stage and at least a portion of the residual gases from the gasoline synthesis stage comprising carbon oxides, hydrogen, methane and minor amounts of C2 -C4 hydrocarbons is fed to the methanol synthesis stage together with fresh synthesis gas."

Note that, as in "carbon oxides ... (are) ... fed to the methanol synthesis stage together with fresh synthesis gas", there is also an element of Carbon Dioxide recycling and utilization inherent in this technology.

In Germany, they know, as Eastman Chemical, in Kingsport, Tennessee, as we've reported, knows: we can convert Coal economically into Methanol.

In Germany, they also know, as ExxonMobil, via their "MTG"(r), methanol-to-gasoline, technology, knows: we can convert Methanol, once synthesized from Coal, into Gasoline.
