Mobil Oil 1976 Coal, & CO2, to Gasoline

We submit herein even more evidence that the conglomerate now doing business as ExxonMobil has, as our own Government, demonstrated by issuance of this and related patents, knows full well, in it's possession a veritable treasure chest full of technologies that would enable us to convert, cleanly and efficiently, our abundant domestic Coal into the liquid fuels we now support tyrannical OPEC regimes, and devastate beautiful coastal environments, for the supply of.

We refer often to ExxonMobil's "MTG"(r), methanol-to-gasoline, technology in our posts. In that technology, a "zeolite" catalyst is employed, as we understand it, to convert the liquid fuel Methanol into Gasoline.

The Methanol is posited by ExxonMobil to be made from Coal; and, multiple technologies, as we have documented and as we will further document, exist for converting Coal efficiently into Methanol, as Eastman Chemical is doing even now at their Kingsport, TN, operation; again, all as we have previously reported.

Mobil Oil, however, as did Esso/Exxon, before their merger, developed multiple technologies for converting Coal into liquid hydrocarbons; and, although Mobil did rely on zeolite catalysts, they didn't in all cases utilize the intermediary of Methanol to synthesize Gasoline from Coal.

And, there is one critical piece of very enlightening information, disclosed herein, in an almost off-hand way, that we will explain in comments following excerpts from the enclosed link to:

"United States Patent 3,972,958 - Conversion of Coal to High Octane Gasoline

Date: August, 1976

Inventor: William Garwood, et. al., NJ and PA

Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation, NY

Abstract: An integrated process for converting coal to high octane gasoline by gasifying the coal in such manner as to form a gas comprising carbon oxides, hydrogen and methane; contacting this gas in one or a series of steps with one or a series of catalysts, respectively comprising a special high silica to alumina ratio zeolite; converting the carbon oxides and hydrogen by such contact to a product comprising water, high octane aromatic gasoline and light hydrocarbon gases; alkylating the C3 and C4 olefins with the isobutane in the light gases to produce alkylate gasoline; admixing the aromatic and alkylate gasoline; and subjecting the C2 portion of the product to steam reforming whereby additional synthesis gas to be admixed with the gas produced by coal gasification is formed.

Description: This invention relates to the upgrading of coal. It more particularly refers to the efficient conversion of coal into high octane, liquid, hydrocarbon gasoline."
----------

There is much more, of course, but, this must not be missed:

In addition to providing for the "efficient conversion of coal into high octane ... gasoline", this technology also incorporates the "steam reforming" of "C2" to form additional hydrocarbon "synthesis gas to be" mixed with the products of "coal gasification".

Carbon Dioxide is, most definitely, a "C2" compound.

Our interpretation is that they are, as we have earlier reported to be feasible and practical, adding Carbon Dioxide to an indirect process of Coal conversion, wherein that Carbon Dioxide is hydrogenated, reformed, with Steam in order to generate even more hydrocarbon synthesis gas, which can be added to the syngas already being generated from Coal, to increase the volumes and amounts of liquid hydrocarbons, the "gasoline", ultimately produced.

Coal conversion, based on our interpretation, in this three decades-old technology, enables the direct recycling of Carbon Dioxide.

Further comment from us would seem superfluous.
